While stressing that Epidemiology Unit is accused of the credibility of the morbidity and mortality data on COVID -19, Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) in a missive to the President said that the Epidemiology Unit has failed in all the six tasks they are accountable for.
The GMOA said they had repeatedly pointed out that the credible real time data is the most vital factor for implementing a public health strategy towards controlling the pandemic.
However, the Epidemiology Unit has failed in all the six tasks they are accountable for such as Disease Surveillance, Outbreak control, Vaccination co-ordination, clinical management, operational research, monitoring and evaluation.
Considering the current situation, the GMOA requested the President to assign the above tasks to Dr. S.M. Arnold, DDG Public Health Services (PHS- I) and appoint six committees under him to perform the above six tasks.
"The Consultant Community Physicians attached to the Epidemiology unit shall be appointed to head these committees, so that they can work in collaboration with relevant authorities, experts and stakeholders to rectify the current crisis," the GMOA added.
The GMOA was extremely critical of Epidemiology Unit at one point and its President was very much vocal during meetings with President on Epidemiology Unit which was under Dr Sudath Samaraweera, who was subsequently removed following certain accusations levelled by GMOA President and several others with regard to the daily COVID-19 death toll. Chux Wednesday, 18 August 2021 06:32 PM
Look who is accusing people who have had over 100 strikes during the last regime and now chief advisers of the present government?? Shame on GMOA
Ranjith Wednesday, 18 August 2021 06:58 PM
Nandesena should have led in front but it didn't happen and entire health sector failed in their mission vaccinations was ordered late and spreading of virus was not properly monitored now we are facing the consequences ,this nothing new since we got our independence we have failed

Why can't you admit that you and your government has failed.
Sam Silva Wednesday, 18 August 2021 07:14 PM
The whole country has failed due to one foolish, ignorant, incompetent, hard headed and stupid person.
Sumal Wednesday, 18 August 2021 07:36 PM
If it is from SLMA we can believe. GMOA is not credible professional body, it is a trade union.
Samson Wednesday, 18 August 2021 07:39 PM
It is a known fact that all have failed
fail and bail Wednesday, 18 August 2021 07:57 PM
now the epidemiology unit has written to the pesident saying the 'GOMA' has failed. former health minister says the transport minister failed. we have all failed...only 'silva' passed (air).

The whole exercise of the reshuffle of the Cabinet was a ploy adopted by Nandasena as only the Health Minister had to be replaced due to alleged corruption in handling the vaccine program but in order to limit the damage, some cards were reshuffled to show it as a routine exercise.

When stupids have failed to heed professional advice and try to cut the grass under their feet what else do you expect?

If all the important tasks are meant to be done by others what does the president and his ministers do exactly? Just sit back and throw blame at others?

What a shame that even after two years of the pandemic, the ministry of health has failed to implement even a proper data management system. Needless to say, this affects the whole Covid -19 treatment programme adversely.

Data mismanagement is the backbone of this Government. How can you change it? They will thrive as long as "deaf and blind voters" are there to support them. Sorry forgot..... this Govt is also good at begging.

GMOA is trying to divert the blame to Epidemiology unit, hence save the government/president who are finally behind this mess. Why GMOA was silent when officers like Dr.Anil Jasinghe who efficiently took action to control COVID are removed from their duties..?
Pavadeniya Thursday, 19 August 2021 10:18 AM
GMOA is trying to curry favour with Gota with an ulterior motive which the Gota understands.
sas Thursday, 19 August 2021 10:22 AM
GMOA never blames the government. It tries to find scapegoat's in health ministry officials. A doctor attached to the Ragama hospital died from COVID-19. Now what does Dr. Padeniya say ? He seems to be hiding?
