While stressing the point that a minority of fully vaccinated people could get severe disease, and may even die, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) requested the Government to consider giving a third dose to people whose immune system is weak despite being fully vaccinated.

SLMA President Dr Padma Gunaratne said studies from Bahrain has shown that in those over 50 years, people given the Sinopharm vaccine, while preventing death and severe disease compared to the unvaccinated, had a slightly increased death rate, and hospitalization compared to the Pfizer, Moderna, Sputnik and Astra Zeneca vaccines.

“Studies from the laboratory of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, Sri Jayawardanapura University (SJPU) has also shown that, while almost all people over 60 years given the AZ vaccine develop antibodies, a very small proportion, 7%, given Sinopharm do not do so,” she explained.

In addition, Dr Gunaratne said patients with some diseases or on certain drugs (organ and stem cell (bone marrow) transplant recipients, patients with active cancer, those on immunosuppressive therapies and on dialysis, advanced HIV have a weak immune system, and will not produce antibodies, whatever the vaccine that was given.

Thus, the SLMA proposed that people over 60 who had been given 2 doses of Sinopharm, and those with a weak immune system, be given a third dose, with AztraZeneca, Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Heheee.. where to laugh? Does the vaccine works? who knows? Are these vaccines approved by SLMA, nor any medical association around the world? I don't think so. Have you signed the waiver before taking the vaccine saying that nor government or any doctor take responsible for the vaccine.

Do not be a stupid anti vaccine campaigner. It is not a laughing matter.

We all are stuck with this pandemic... When will we have a redemption

What I find tricky here is that Sinopharm gives lesser protection against COVID than that of other vaccines. But Sri Lanka is giving priority to Sinopharm, isn’t?

    LankanLover Thursday, 09 September 2021 04:22 PM

That is the power of China

    vince Thursday, 09 September 2021 05:55 PM

Any vaccine is better than no vaccine. If the richer nations don't hoard vaccines maybe everyone can have them. Asa for the efficacy of vaccines, it depends on where the findings are coming from. The west likes to downgrade vaccines from the east.

Branding, Marketing, it's just the name that makes people think one is better than the other, even in US where everyone who is vaccinated has gotten Pfizer were ending up in hospitals, and they are talking about a 3rd jab, why these egoistic thinking we have here that one is better than the other, for every company that made vaccines this virus was a new area, so why don't we just take what is available, for our health rather than the name or status, coz it's not that we will be protected 100% from covid whatever vaccine, atleast we will be safer and others too

Then why is SLTDA telling the health authorities to amend guidelines to allow fully vaccinated tourists to come to SL ?

    Chris Thursday, 09 September 2021 04:49 PM

This is why China wants to set up vaccine filling plant in SL. We will be buying only Sinopharm for the next 3 years.!!

It is obvious the Doctors Know Nothing About The VACCINES nor THE COVID-19. They are simply making random statements from time to time to make sure their “expert” reputation remains intact. Doctors can’t keep fooling people forever.

    agree.

    Mizaru Thursday, 09 September 2021 05:07 PM

Nothing new. We all know that Pfizer, Modena and AstraZeneca has a high efficacy compared to Sinopharm. Why not the SLMA come clean and ask the government to use the vaccines with a high efficacy. Sri Lanka is on the brink of bankruptcy and cannot waste money on vaccines with low efficacy.

mala jola Thursday, 09 September 2021 05:10 PM

Still purchased Synopharm at higher rate than other vaccines, and kingpins not jabbed with Synopharm. Corrupt from Southern to Nothern tips.

    Mizaru Thursday, 09 September 2021 05:31 PM

SLMA, come clean as say the Sinopharm vaccine is not the solution for Sri Lanka. Do not beat around the bush!

    Dee Thursday, 09 September 2021 05:52 PM

Ok. Please atleast start from Hambanthota. Not very many over 60's on that part.

    Romanis Thursday, 09 September 2021 07:21 PM

Why is the SLMA discouraging people taking Sinopharm Vaccine by saying its' effectiveness is lesser than other Vaccines?

Sachi Kuhananthan, MD Thursday, 09 September 2021 07:29 PM

Vaccines don't seem to provide any protection. Look at Istrael. Even after fully vaccinating 70 percent of the population, they still have a lot of cases and deaths.
