Fmr MP Abeyratne arrested for firing shots to scare group in Horana

Former MP and present SJB organiser for Horana, P.D. Abeyratne has been arrested for shooting into the air with his firearm to scared a group of people at Boralugoda in Horana.

Police said a couple was staying to look after a land belonging to the former MP in the area, and he has told the couple not to bring outsiders to the place.

However, when the former MP went to his land on Wednesday (14), a group of outsiders had been present on the land, and then there had been a dispute between the former MP and the group.

He then had fired shots into the air to warn them, police said.

They said however no one was injured in the shooting.

Accordingly, the Horana Police conducted an investigation and arrested the 70-year-old former MP at his residence in Ingiriya, along with the firearm and 03 rounds of ammunition used in the shooting.

He is to be produced before the Horana Magistrate's Court on Thursday.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

In this instance I dont blame the MP. Land grabing with impunity is a big problem in Srilanka. The police refuses to get involved saying it is a civil matter and to get it resolved at the courts. The genuine owners are forced to spend money on day light robbers called lawyers and wasting years in courts. The land laws, should be changed to reflect the current technoligies to speed up the court cases.
