The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said it had revised the fees of Sri Lankan workers going abroad and the license fees of license holders as of tomorrow (July 1).

Addressing the media Deputy General Manager of the Training and Recruitment Division of the Foreign Service Bureau, Gamini Senarath Yapa, said the charges for new registration at the Bureau would be increased to Rs. 21,469.

Earlier, the registration amount was Rs. 17,928, which included the Government Tax.

He said the fee for new registrations would be increased by 20 percent, according to a circular issued by the Treasury.

“Rs 4,483 will be charged for an update of a registration that was at Rs. 3,000,” he said.

“The renewal of the annual license given by the licensed employment agencies will be increased to Rs. 117,949, including taxes. Earlier, the renewal charges were Rs. 50,000, and the new amount has been increased to Rs. 100,000,” he said.

The charges were increased according to a Gazette notification issued on June 23 by the Subject Minister. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

How can a destitute person trying to go abroad to find some gainful employment to support the family here after pawning / selling whatever valuables the person owns has to pay these exorbitant charges levied now? This is a hopeless country to be born poor. Thanks to our corrupt, rogue politicos in power who enjoy with the poor tax payers money with no contribution to the country or is poor citizens.

Taxing the people's only means most SL governments know how to run an economy... RIP SL

This is pathetic. I have seen many times those house maids going to middle east were detained at SLBFE counter at BIA asking their taxes. Most of them are very poor and have no money. They are crying. Please stop collecting this tax from house maids.

Even in a rich country like Germany, people take jobs abroad to get a better income. In this case, however, all costs including flight, visa and so on are borne in full by the employer abroad. It is strictly forbidden for job agencies to be paid by job seekers. Again, all fees must be paid by the employer. Reputable foreign companies also act in this way in Sri Lanka, but mostly without hiring job agencies. Similar laws should be introduced in Sri Lanka as in Germany. The job agencies will then let the foreign employers pay them. The fact that the Governmet is charging migrant workers here is completely absurd.

This is to make the SLBFE officers richer and the Minister to fund continuous tours of his wife and her friends at SLBFE money.

TAKING MONEY FROM EXPAT WORKERS IS NOT FAIR. LET THE REGISTRATION BE VOLUNTARY AND NOT MANDATORY

The old famous saying "Thieves of the highest standards" comes to mind fast. Most times these guys don't even help or take responsibility for the people to obtain the jobs. However, definitely have beggars from the Bureau of Foreign Employment standing around at the exit gate for their loyalty. Hope there is a God out there.

What is the service provided for charges? Saturday, 01 July 2023 08:32 AM

When I was going abroad, a bunch SLBFE guys were collecting money at the Airport. They asked me to pay, for Insurance. One guy wrote a receipt and he could not write my name appearing in my passport. He wrote it wrong. When I asked what insurance they can give when my name is wrong, the whole bunch had no answer. By the way what is the service given for the amount charged? Can we know!

This increase will pave the way to all Ministers to go aboard with their family members and friends. What a curse.
