Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said at least three months will be needed to reduce the prices of eggs and chicken.

In an address to the media, he stated there is no need to import eggs due to the development of the poultry industry.

The minister added that his goal is not to continue importing eggs to Sri Lanka, but to transform the animal husbandry project into an export-oriented project to supply the foreign markets.

The poultry industry is a significant contributor to Sri Lanka's economy and the country has seen a steady growth in poultry production over the years.

This growth has led to a reduction in the need for imports of eggs and chicken, said the Minister.

Minister Amaraweera's comments come at a time when Sri Lanka's egg and chicken prices continue to rise, causing concern among consumers.

Despite the challenges, the government is taking steps to address the issue, with the Agriculture Ministry implementing measures to increase local production and reduce imports.

The prices were reasonable until the Phottuwa government banned the import of essential medicines and necessary items needed for the poultry breeders. They did the same thing to the farmers made them paupers. If the minister cannot understand this basic premise he should not talk nonsense about solving the prevalent problems about eggs

You are dreaming of exporting poultry products before you could satisfy the local demand. You could have reduced the tax for imported chicken feed until we are able to produce them locally. On another note, what has the dollar rate got to do with the price of fish? We are not feeding the fish. We are an island and we pay European price for fish. The non availability of fish at an affordable price has caused malnutrition specifically amongst children. The Chinese and the Japanese are given licenses to fish in our waters, the Indians are allowed to poach in our waters. Why can’t you ministers do what is feasible and make an impact in our lives positively.
