Covid deaths increasing; country at risk: Fernandopulle

Claiming that the Covid-19 deaths have increased by 48.8%, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID-19 Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle said the country was at risk at the moment.

She urged the public not to leave their homes except for urgent matters.

"Currently, the number of cases reported in Sri Lanka has increased by 30% while the deaths have increased by 48.8%.The only cure for COVID-19 is to prevent the disease from spreading. This month is very risky. Stay home,” she told reporters following the Gampaha District COVID-19 Control Committee meeting.

“My opinion does not matter. Decision-makers will make decisions. But the country is at risk. Do not wait for the government and the Ministry of Health [to impose laws]. The value of your life is yours. Protect your family. So don’t wait until a lockdown is imposed or someone makes rules. Learn to protect yourself. Follow the health guidelines as told. Stop all unnecessary travel. Stop unwanted parties. Stop visiting relatives unnecessarily. This is to protect oneself. This is a matter of life and death,”Fernandopulle further sad.

Your true action and words are very much appreciated, madam. It is not worth telling people in SL as Secretary to the President to issue circulars to come all employees to the office every day. This had to be told to the head of the Task Force For control of COvid 19 in SL.

You all know very well that country is at great risk so it's the duty of our representatives at Parliament to find ways and means to reduce this risk. Mere statements of this nature is of no use.

I wrote to the President Gotabyah in January this year, using what happened 100 years ago as the basis, that Covid Infection in India would most probably trigger more dangerous versions of the Covid, and therefore Sri Lanka must immediately take pre-emptive action to isolate completely from India. I don’t think anyone took my letter seriously. For Reasons unknown historically almost every time an infection passes into India, it becomes much more virulent than the original pathogen before moving out of India to spread to other countries.

Thank you madam for being bold enough to be honest with us citizens. We hear that a cabinet reshuffle is in the offing including a change in the health portfolio. Given the circumstances and the pubic confidence you have gained, you seem to the the best person for the job. However those making the selection may not like the fact that you are open and honest with the citizens, and that the message cannot be manged to their liking. That alone may be sufficient grounds to them for you to miss out despite your credentials, capability and public acceptance. Keep up the good work you do in the public interest.
