Following a report that the perks given to ex-Presidents have to be pruned as some of them are unauthorized, a senior official from the President's Office said the matter has to be confirmed by an audit while the judiciary should also give a verdict on it.

"It is a matter for the Audit and Courts if such a thing has happened," the official who is close to President Ranil Wickremesinghe told the Daily Mirror.

It was reported earlier that the State had paid electricity and water bills of some ex-Presidents in violation of the Presidential Privileges Act.

A former President is legally entitled to a pension, an official residence, fuel for three vehicles and a personal secretary. (Yohan Perera)

Can you believe they are entitled to fuel for three vehicles. Not even well developed countries have those privileges. No wonder SL is a developing country and it will stay that way for another thousand years with idiots ruling it.

There needs to be a Public Committee consisting of five eminent persons belonging to the ordinary public. The five persons need to be voted in by Public. All privilege's for not only President but also for Ministers should get approval from this Committee.

Why this luxury Wednesday, 26 July 2023 05:16 PM

There are Presidents who have served two Terms aggregating Ten Years. In the case of Gotabaya and Ranil, both will together serve only Five Years making the Tax Payers to meet double the expenditure. for half the period served ? What is the rationale here ?

It is not uncle JRJ - The Satan JRJ, who destroyed the SL politics! All prez's and their families must repay to poor public to buy bread!

So we have all these free loaders who horded money when they were in power are still getting paid. Abolish all benefits except pension. Also ensure that pension varies on the basis of period served.

All of them are responsible for the demise of this country. Let them pay 35% of income tax from all liquid cash perks as well as the value of the equity taken free from the state.

They. have to be looked after in a secure place and the personnel should be selected by them including their conditions of service. Some serious consideration should also be given to the number of years they served Ex President's should also be able to select a place for a presidential library and stock it. If a debt ridden country like the U S could do it we do have the means to do it all costs are in any case a serious contribute to economic activity. Most if not all past ex presidents will support this proposal beyond party lines

Good move to prune all the un-authorized perks and benefits to Ex-Presidents. An Audit should be conducted on this matter independently and put to the courts and get the right verdict at the right time.
