The government does not need to be in the business of running businesses. Politicians like businesses as they could be stacked with their lackeys and and there are many kick back arrangements possible through the various contracts and deals. If we are serious about eliminating corruption get rid of state owned business enterprises. Efficiency would increase by leaps and bounds as dead wood will be shed.

If we are not going to get an infusion of foreign exchange via some sort if external infusion (loans are the main option as grants are scarce), AKD need to clearly articulate the alternate option that he sees. If he cannot do so then he keep quiet and not criticize and object.

The IMF agreement has very broad and far reaching requirements to tackle corruption. What the various governments have not been able to do all these years, ( including those that included these red brothers), with regards to addressing corruption , the IMF agreement is seeking to achieve . The IMF agreement will be the best bet to address institutionalized corruption.

OK , I agree with you about loans, Yes , Ranil and Sirisena obtained USD 12.5 billion loans to import luxury items for their clan. Rajapakshas may have robbed the country but they showed a lot of development in the country. Yahapalana just ate it. But I am now n disappointed that you still believe that state enterprise will work and corrupt ton free. That is the most unrealistic view . These are failing even in developed countries. So let these be in private sector under good governance from the government. By the way, I remember that you blamed Gota for not going to IMF at an earlier stage. Real hypocrat right ?

Ranil was utter failure as Yahapalayana PM. His party was routed, with only one national seat. Only the most deluded could believe he has any real experience to get country ahead after the worsening our plight from 2015-2019. All the loans he obtained achieved nothing, but more interest payments. UNP/Ranil like the proverbial leopard does not change its spots and will be failure with the same faces again.

Most developed countries have adopted selling state assets decades ago. Governments should not get involved in business. Specially in countries like ours where there is corruption. Probation is the answer. Then we don't have to pay taxes to loss making public enterprises. Also when they are privatize they become profitable and pay tax on their profit to government. NPP is still in mindset of Cuba North Korea and former Soviet union.

How are you going to stop corruption when the SL people vote in corrupt politicians who will keep them in their wasteful corrupt 2 million govt jobs that is a bigger corruption and waste then the politicians themselves? Everybody knows corruption has to be stamped out, but come out with a plan man And how are you going to keep the people fed until you stamp out this corruption? What about the other problems keeping the country in poverty like peoples lack os skills, productivity, efficiency, capital, etc, etc…. Don’t be green like a fresh university graduate. Taking the Indian credit loan without making public the conditions was awful. It is probably a high interest loan with short term period. Now we are suffering with having a lot of the IMF loan going to pay off that loan. Government should not have taken out either of the two loans.

Whatever you do had a cost! The IMF path has the cost of middle class working population reducing their spending qualities! IMF propose a buffer for the poor! If we go in any other path, like overhauling the whole government system, by some type of revolution, it will also have a cost! Most probably the rupee will cease to exist as a currency! Then all 600,000 pensioners will be left high and dry! Most old people will die!
