A five year old boy of Detagamuwa in Kataragama who received serious injuries on Wednesday (16) when an air rifle misfired, succumbed to his injuries today at the Karapitiya teaching hospital in Galle.
He had been admitted to Debarawewa Base Hospital and transferred to Hambantota General hospital and from there to Karapitiya teaching hospital. He had undergone an urgent surgery at the Karapitiya hospital.
The victim Nilesh Thejas Asith (05) of Detagamuwa colony was a Grade one student of Detagamuwa Vidyalaya.
His father told police that his 18 year old brother living in the adjacent house often used to play with the little boy and the air rifle had gone off accidentally due to it being mishandled.
The father’s brother Kavindu Methmal was taken in for questioning on suspicion by Kataragama police. (M.K.Nandasena)

All type of Air rifles should be banned , not a safe thing to play with.

It is like banning motorbikes because a child stole his fathers motorbike and got himself killed by traffic. Simply illogical

Playing with an air rifle with a 5 year old and no one anticipated the possible outcome? May be negligence and child endangerment charges should be brought against the parents and the child's uncle but then losing a child is a life long punishment in itself. So rest in peace sweet boy. Hope the family heals from this nightmare.
