A committee appointed for working out preliminary arrangements for talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held talks with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today ahead of seeking Cabinet approval for them, a top government source said.
The committee is headed by Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris. Others are Justice Minister Ali Sabry, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and Finance Ministry Secretary S.R. Attygalle.
The source said the preliminary arrangements proposed by the committee would be referred to the Cabinet for approval.
The government is reaching out to the IMF for rescheduling debts to tide over the foreign exchange crisis.
The committee is currently working out modalities for the appointment of a financial and legal consultant to initiate talks with the IMF on behalf of the government.
The modalities will be presented to the Cabinet for approval next Monday. (Kelum Bandara)
