The construction work of the newly built Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) within the Colombo Port was initiated today.

The project was flagged off by Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Gopal Bagle was also among the participants at this event as a special guest.

The entire project will cost US$789 million. 51% of this total investment belongs to India's Adani Group, 34% to John Keells Holdings PLC, and 15% to Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

The length of the jetty constructed under this project is 1,400 metres. The total terminal area is 65 hectares. The container capacity of this terminal is three million.

The construction company emphasises that an 800-meter-long jetty will be constructed with 18 automatic terminal cranes will be installed under the first phase of this terminal, which will be built in two phases.

Minister Silva stated that the Indian government has provided significant assistance in resolving Sri Lanka's current economic crisis.

He said that after the completion of this project, a large number of Sri Lankan youth will get job opportunities, and the Sri Lanka Port Authority will be able to earn a large foreign exchange.

Speaking on this occasion, Indian High Commissioner  Bagle said the relationship between the two countries will be further strengthened through this project, and he would like to extend his best wishes being the Indian High Commissioner. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

This utterly foolish Lawmaker will say 'YES' to anything, even if it wrecks the Nation. He should have never been appointed to this important role. MM

All other projects have ceased due to rocket escalated construction material costs! Bring them down ASAP as the contractors, engineers and architects have no work now!

In the recent past Gotta was pressurised by Modi to award the lion share of contract to India’s Adani group. And now the Indians have got it but the people would not accept it.

Congratulations. This is a viable venture, India will be an economic giant in few years, be with India and the west to uplift our economy.

People don’t want the Indians to get involved in any projects in Sri Lanka. Even by India’s low standards Adani Group is considered the most corrupt. The Sri Lankans waving the flag and smiling in the photo , all would have been bribed in thousands by this Indian group. With Indians leading the construction the port could one day collapse into the sea.

This is the last opportunity that De Silva got to fly a FLAG of his own wishes, hereinafter, the INDIAN FLAG will be hoisted as SYMBOL OF TAMIL EELAM. Pathetically we LOST our United Buddhist Sri Lanka.

It is great that development is continuing in Sri Lanka regardless of the economic issues. The country can progress slowly but steadily.

No details of Consultants, Contractors, Project Duration, etc. As Adhani is the owner, SLPA don't know. Once, completed, SLPA will be in the dark with no clue. Wonderful!

Oh here they go again screwing the environment all they want, with scant regard for the same. Idiots will turn what’s left of this place, into a desert one day.

Hey GHT-Indian flag is neither a Tamil represenattaion or that of Eelam. Buddhist SL was never united, so you have not lost anything

    Lokesh Thursday, 10 November 2022 04:32 PM

GG- This is Adnai's invetsment- you SL fellows do not have money to invest in your own country for developemnt work which will employ you guys who are without work in a bankrupt nation of 2500 years old Sinhala Buddhist culture. Buddha also sent from India. We Indians have to come and distribute your fuel which the inefficient loss making CPC cannot do,and we still pay huge taxes to run your govt. So keep your gap shut (forever)

    shruthi Thursday, 10 November 2022 04:36 PM

when no one including SL Govt. is investing in SL ( LOLC is investing in Africa) Be thankful at;eats teh Indians are investing, that too such a clossal amount. Atleast SL will get some employment

Alas, such a pity Sri Lanka has shamelessly caved in to these predators, similar to handing over our national assets, the Trinco Oil farm tanks. Why choose someone with a questionable reputation? It will be worse than the Chinese making inroads into our country. Adani has been blacklisted in Australia and is kept at arms length due to his reputation.

    wsw Friday, 11 November 2022 09:16 AM

@Lokesh, most Sri Lankans will never trust an Indian, naturally, with good reason. As for your comment "We Indians have to come and distribute your fuel which the inefficient loss making CPC cannot do" All you fellows have been doing is "making hay while sunshine" capitalising on the current crisis making insane profits, all at our expense. Indians introduced Terrorism to our country and ensured we went backwards for over Thirty years. Adding insult to injury, your Tamil Naido fisherthieves have been relentlessly "LOOTING" off our Northern waters depriving our fishermen of their livelihood. Once arrested, the clowns from other side of the ditch, cry foul like idiots. Much better off to be indebted to the Chinese.
