Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Indira Kahawita today warned the public about the widely sold skin-whitening creams and other products online.

Addressing the media, she said hundreds of skin-whitening products are available on various websites, and people are getting deceived that their skin would turn fairer overnight after using those creams and products.

Dr. Kahawita warned the public to inquire about the product by asking questions such as the active ingredients used in them and whether the product has been registered in the country.

"Instead of the above, people are very keen to know the prices and the number of days it should be used to get fairer skin. People have been tantalised with the myth of getting fair and it has become a menace now," she said.

"We do not recommend any product that turns the skin fairer overnight. If anyone wants to make any changes to his/her skin, it should be done gradually and methodically," Dr. Kahawita reiterated. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

The desire to have a fairer skin stem from the fact the world is owned and run by white skin Christians. There is nothing inherently great about fair skin. If the dominant countries on this planet are dark brown skinned then people would want to have dark brown skin. This is the reason we all should support the idea of non-white countries becoming powerful on this planet. But we have dark skin converted Christians shamelessly subscribing to the view that the Whites Must Rule This Planet.

The whole of Sri Lanka is in a frenzy to become fairer. Specially the pressure is vey high on dark skin girls. NO ONE IN SRI LANKA HAS GIVEN THESE PEOPLE ANY PSYCHOLOGICAL ADVICE OR COMFORT. What this doctor (dermatologist) said is no answer to the psychological crisis we have now. But, what you have commented is the only thing I have read or heard about that would go a long way in soothing the minds of thousands of Sri Lankans. I like to see your comment is posted in every school and every street in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans must be the most racist people in the world.

Sri Lankans must be the most racist people in the world. It has nothing to do with race, I am sure they don't want to change their race. Here people use skin- browning creams. A lot of women( and men) think they look too white and pale.

It is at least the dermatologists responsibility to educate those uneducated people who think "whiter, fairer" skin is better than brown or darker skin. What is going on and what is wrong with this society? This is very alarming! We are becoming such a "foolish" society in so many levels!

Government should ban skin whitening products and have huge fines and jail terms for anyone selling.

#European: I agree. It is silly to blame white people for this and everything. People in Sri Lanka should do more selfreflection. A lot of white people envy our brown skin. And what has Christianity to do with this?

This change has to start some where . Our product advertisers and teledrama/movie producers are responsible for this trend. We know almost every person in commercials is a fair/light skin person, it could be for noodles advertisement or chocolate. Every teledrama personalities are the same. Only dark skin characters are either robbers or gangsters. All the young lovers are lighter skin people. So people think that lighter skin people are superior or to get in to beauty contests pageants they need to be lighter. It will take very long time and responsible people in the society should talk about this to change this trend.

Yes all our film actors are light skinned etc. But more importantly the Christians both Protestants and Catholic of Sri Lanka go to their Churches to pray to their God. What colour is their God ? Colour of their colonial masters!!So they become very respectful of their former white masters and give loyalty to them first and only second loyalty to Sri Lanka. This is how Christianity playing a part in this debate.
