This is not a big amount of money with this high inflation rate ..how long he can survive with this money .. Why do you bother too much about this beggar and yet do not worry about million of dollars stolen from public funds and money ..MPs have stolen billions and yet you don't worry about it .. If only when poor people do something like this all go mad about it

We need to take him as an example, specially the government. He lived within his means and saved for the rainy day. The Sri Lanka government “කාපල්ලා, බිපල්ලා,හොරකන් කරපල්ලා, හිගාකාපලිලා”.

He was a professional beggar like most beggars here. At least he was saving the money and it is not a big amount by today's standards. I met a beggar family here in the US a young couple with two babies. On a hot summer day they would sit on the curb near a shopping area and beg, evoking sympathy. A few days later there were photos of them shopping in an upscale grocery store and driving off in a Mercedes SUV. I don't like to judge anyone but I don't like being deceived either.

    perera Monday, 07 November 2022 04:52 PM

At least he did not steal and take bribes like most of those leeches in parliament.

Surely a lot of commenters will be happy about the fact that this will be the very last time I write a comment. I am completely disgusted by some of the comments about rapist Gunathilaka. How some commenters still defend his actions, how disgusting denigrating commenters wrote about this poor woman and Western women in general. It was all about this man who can't accept no and about the f***cking cricket game, no compassion for the women at all. Sri Lankan men still have a very long way to go. No means no, no matter what! Not one comment about the women whose lifes he destroyed. And DM is publishing all this filthy comments. Surely the British DM will never publish these cruel backwarded comments as probably Western people are too sophisticated to comment like this about women. Shame shame shame on you all!

Sadly he didn’t live long to enjoy the wealth he accumulated….may his soul rest in peace.

    LankanLover Monday, 07 November 2022 05:38 PM

It is the given money by the public, not stolen. with fluctuation rate, 135000 rupees is nothing in Sri Lanka. Can you guy mention the amount that has been stolen by our hora gang in the power?

    Sunny Monday, 07 November 2022 06:09 PM

    Better than SL government

    IsthisevenNews Monday, 07 November 2022 06:20 PM

He was definitely stealing money on the pretext that he doesn’t have food to eat, etc. But we don’t know his background he may have a surgery coming up, may have 6 children to feed or in debt or a disability that prevents him from working (not all disabilities are visible)

    shan Monday, 07 November 2022 06:31 PM

The News highlights only his money and bank passes. He is dead in an accident. Who is responsible for his death? What about the political thieves who have stolen billions of dollars?

    Dee Monday, 07 November 2022 06:35 PM

A professional beggar who works for 8 hours plus earns atleast 10k a day. If with some deformity or with a child (most probably rented) about 50% more. So it's nothing to investigate.

    Lala Monday, 07 November 2022 06:43 PM

HE IS BETTER THEN OUR POLITICIANS NOT ROBBED AND NOT TAKEN COMMISSION. HOT SUN HARD EARNED.

    Tony Monday, 07 November 2022 07:54 PM

    Wow great discovery

    Mandayan Monday, 07 November 2022 08:50 PM

Go around and check the bank accounts abroad of all politicians.

    Sam Monday, 07 November 2022 08:56 PM

Ministers earn that in seconds with their backhanders and deals. Focus on that.

"Do not steal, Do not lie, Do not cheat... The government hates competition."

    SW Monday, 07 November 2022 09:54 PM

How did this even make the news? Other than as a fatal traffic accident, that is. At today's rate, what is a meagre Rs.182,000??? It might not even suffice to cover the cost of the poor man's funeral arrangements! At least he had the sense to set something aside for a rainy day... eventhough he didn't live to see it.

    Raj Monday, 07 November 2022 10:01 PM

Appears police is investigating about his money and bank accounts not the accident itself which has taken his life!

    G Monday, 07 November 2022 10:02 PM

Saving money with out enjoying with it....- it's meaningless... now who will enjoy his savings?

Fathima Lai Monday, 07 November 2022 10:42 PM

So what is the big deal here? Ensure this money reaches his loved ones if he has any. This is not a big amount, neither it is illegally earned.

Ryle Lloyd Wijesinghe Tuesday, 08 November 2022 12:30 AM

He should be taken as a good example. Better than stealing from the people.

    Ari Tuesday, 08 November 2022 01:29 AM

If our politicians who are driven in luxury SUVs and go begging to IMF and other countries, what's wrong with other citizens taking a leaf from them.

    Equal Tuesday, 08 November 2022 05:42 AM

Baffles me the true nature of this article.

    SC Tuesday, 08 November 2022 07:15 AM

There is no law against begging in SL. People who want to give them something will do it, nothing wrong in that either. This guy has not stolen public funds, nor has he destroyed our economy by begging.

mohamed haroon Tuesday, 08 November 2022 07:20 AM

re-word the caption, having cash 135k is not a begger

Poor Sri Lankan Tuesday, 08 November 2022 08:28 AM

Poor guy. He would have planed to live bit longer by saving money. May his soul rest in peace.

Andrew Silva Tuesday, 08 November 2022 08:34 AM

Mr. Palamurugan is a great example who has shown our Sri Lankan’s that with hard work any one can earn money. To earn that money how many days, weeks, months and years he would have spent in the hot burning sun. Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe who participated in a exercise programme could not wait even for 5 minuets with out a Air Conditioner. What a difference of the rich and the poor.

Sri Lanka Rob Tuesday, 08 November 2022 08:35 AM

Please protect this money from the Sri Lanka Police. They will Rob this money from the beggar.

    Adwani Tuesday, 08 November 2022 10:11 AM

If Gota or Mahinda get knocked down, how many Pass Books, Foreign Currency Accounts, etc. will the Police find???

    TR Tuesday, 08 November 2022 11:00 AM

THIS BEGGAR CERTAINLY HAD BETTER ECONOMIC PLANS FOR HIMSELF BETTER THAN THAT OF OUR COUNTY FINANCE MINISTRY

    Quolp Tuesday, 08 November 2022 06:37 PM

No use of investigation, no one seems to witness the side of BEGGAR, the person responsible for the accident will be given bail by the respective courts, and he will leave to his free will thereafter.
