The Foreign Employment Ministry is to take every possible action to prevent all attempts to travel abroad for work under tourist visas.

Addressing the media, Minister Manusha Nanayakkara advised the ministry officials to take action to send women abroad for all jobs especially to the countries such as the UAE and Oman under work visa.

"The ministry has been notified by the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment about women travelling on tourist visas with the hope of finding jobs in the UAE, and they become stranded without being able to find any jobs and instead become victims of various types of harassments, imprisonment and getting lost," the minister said.

Therefore, the minister took this decision to prevent all such attempts to go abroad to work on tourist visas.

Meanwhile, the minister also took action yesterday to suspend people who are applying for domestic and unskilled jobs through the SLBFE registered employment agents.

Also, the minister had instructed the officers at the SLBFE unit established in the airport to closely monitor the women who are travelling overseas seeking jobs in the above mentioned countries under Tourist visas.

If the SLBFE officials could confirm that the men and women applying for jobs through fake documents, legal action will be taken against such people through the bureau, the minister added.

The SLFEB advises all Sri Lankans about the importance of travelling abroad through legal channels, especially for those seeking foreign employment. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Manusha what's your problem man!?? If people have Visas to travel overseas allow them to leave!! People can always check job prospects by visiting overseas!!

This is a fantastic move and it’s not only women, authorities should also monitor men traveling to these countries who can even speak a word of English. Many such Lankan’s citizens are stranded in various locations unable to find jobs and extend visas. Please monitor travelers with new passports and let travelers to have a guarantor for their return with a posted dated cheque submitted to the destination consulate.

IN THE NAME OF EMPLOYMENT BUREAU AT THE AIRPORT, STOP HARASSING THE ACTUAL TOURISTS WHO ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY... THOSE WOMEN IN THE SAREES FROM THE AIRPORT EMPLOYMENT BUREAU HAVE NO TRAINING OR CLUE ON WHO TO STOP... PLEASE TRAIN THEM OR STOP ACTING LIKE IDIOTS!!!

    Lala Friday, 04 November 2022 10:34 AM

YES EVEN THEY CANNOT READ THE VISA TOO. SHAME ON OUR COUNTRY EDUCATION. JUST TURN THE PASSPORT PAGES THEN LOOK THE OUR FACES HAND OVER THE PASSPORT

    Daya Friday, 04 November 2022 10:46 AM

Totally agree. Firstly, they should be trained on how to talk to travelers and not to harass asking and checking for passports. They have no right to hold someone's passport and take them around their officers. Some of the ladies are very rude and insist to know the purpose of travel when the travel is not to Middle Eastern countries whereas, even the Immigration Officers do not question it.

I told her she has no right to touch my passport and walked past. Only security, immigration and check in staff can take your passports.

I cant see what is the problem with the Employment Bureau, if the Govt cant provide job opportunities and decent living conditions for its citizen they have to do what it takes to provide a decent living for their families. Does this stupid Minister and the Employment Bureau feed these people and their families ? Isn't it a human right of any human to traveller where ever they want as long as they have a valid visa to enter that country or now these jackasses going to dictate who travels where What damn idiots do we have in this country no wonder its bankrupt

    Lank Friday, 04 November 2022 11:28 AM

You can't do this ..why do you know who goes on holiday and who goes to work .... true holiday makers can change their minds as well .

Our on and off handyman (who does not want any full time job) just got a passport. He thinks he can now get a job overseas. He will not even hold on to anything for more than a week. Imagine such people selling off everything and going abroad?!

    Aram Friday, 04 November 2022 12:35 PM

Employment bureau officers on some occasions allows those tourist visa holders to travel and take money of RS 35 000/- per person,it's said. So minister should give proper guidances that normal people are not harassed. Stopping passengers with valid reasons is the job of Immigration duties. One passenger is stopped can sue the officials in SL with valid reasons

After looting the country of its resources and making the general public poor and downtrodden, these political kapuwas making rules to harass further. Finally, when the youth could not find the jobs will take up arms to fight those crooks like Manusaa.

    Kos Friday, 04 November 2022 06:12 PM

Manusha, people are starving, Dread of poverty. What options they have.it’s their privilege and freedom. You are only worried about what they pay for your institution and regulatory. Don’t forget it’s the fault of your ministry. So rectify them

    Mohamed Friday, 04 November 2022 09:29 PM

Let the people go on visit visa or employment visa what's the problem. After all they send foreign currency to this country. The SLBFE STAFFS AT THE GATE WEARING SAREES SHOULD BE TAUGHT FIRST HOW TO SPEAK WITH A PASSENGER, WHEN SOMEONE IS LEAVING TO ANY MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRIES THEY CAN CHECK THE PASSPORT OF THE BUREAU STAMP AND THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO ASK WHETHER WE ARE GOING ON VISIT OR EMPLOYMENT. WHY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO EUROPEAN COUNTRIES DO NOT PAY BUREAU FEES. THEY ARE ALSO GOING FOR EMPLOYMENT IN THOSE COUNTRIES. SHOULD CHARGE THEM ALSO. THEY ARE NOT DOING ANY WHITE COLOR JOBS IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. THERE ARE FEW WHO DO WHITE COLOR JOBS.

74 years of independence has created a failed, impoverished, subservient almost friendless country that has developed a dependence on foreign employment - washing latrines - to feed our families and bring in foreign exchange to maintain our 330,000 strong Rana viras and our hordes of monks in luxury. So sad.

@Mohamed, Well said, mate. These vultures do bugger all in terms of migrant welfare, which was evident during the Covid pandemic when many were trying to get back. So much for their so called “insurance” which wasn’t even worth one roll of toilet paper. What is the point in charging a fee to people going to the Middle East for employment, when there are no benefits to be availed in return when one needs it the most? Baffling.

The gentlemen frequenting Serangan Road in Singapore will be disappointed if there is not much rotation ie new talent - our damsels arriving on visitor visas to parade their wares - the products of our 2600 year Buddhist civilisation- on the pavements.
