In a letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has urged that it is of utmost importance that the next Inspector General of Police should be an officer whose service in the police force has been exemplary and unblemished and able to restore public confidence in the Sri Lanka Police.

The BASL also stated that it is of utmost importance that the best possible appointment be made to the office of IGP since public confidence in the Police is vital for the administration of justice and the rule of law.

The BASL said it was aware that the office of the Inspector General of Police has fallen vacant on 26 June 2023.

The BASL is of the view that prior to the approval of the appointment of the IGP that the procedures to be followed in regard to recommendations or approvals for appointments under Article 41B or 41C should be determined by the Constitutional Council as provided for in Article 41E(6) of the Constitution.

The BASL further said it has witnessed serious erosion in the public confidence on the Police.

This letter had been issued by BASL President Kaushalya Nawaratne and its Secretary Isuru Balapatabendi. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

How can our country appointment a best person possible when everyone is corrupted. Even if that person is miraculously innocent, it is matter of time to be corrupted. It's the only way to survive in our beautiful country

Ignore the seniorities and go for the person who comes from good family background together with a proper university degree( not internet educated), then all else will fall into place.

Boo hoo BASL, no more good will to you Tuesday, 27 June 2023 10:22 PM

BASL trying to stay in the public eye, after their anti-democratic activity to stall the aragalya. Good to have a laugh about the BASL which no has next to no support from the general public.

Ranil has already made his choice.Even if he has selected Mervyn Silva or Harak Kata he will not change .

Yes. Totally agree. So many are watching the signal that would be sent. That is whether there is any seriousness and sincerity on cleaning up the Police mess. Let's hope that the authorities that really matter will do the right thing by the country and not appoint anyone tainted.

In the recent memory government have NEVER appointed a IGP on their merits!! Gov't appoint someone who'll ignore any Crimes committed by ruling party members!! In another words a stooge, yeah.

President got checkered history in the past and recently as well!! List goes like this Batalanda, Gonawala Sunil, Sothi Upali, Sirisena Cooray!! Mind you the notorious mobster Gonawala Sunil was RANIL'S Body Guard yeah. Fast forward to Bond Scam where RANIL allowed his buddy and Pal Mahendran to loot the Treasury. And most recently RANIL allowed gold smuggling MP Raheem to remain as MP Coz he's financing the GOP yeah!! When compared, MR come on top like Nelson Mandela, yeah!!

We all cry for the best possible appointment but knowing the President I do not trust him to have the best candidate appointed. All our politicians suffer with the decease, appoint a person who will look after the person who appointed him.

RANIL happens to be the worse leader, mind you he never gotta mandate to become the leader.

In spite of the advice of the BASL and the civil society at large, my gut feeling is a dirty thug (DT) will be made the IG. The criteria the government will apply here is someone who will carry out the dirty work of the government.

Make sure no one connected to “Harak Kata” is given the post

BASL s letter I agree. JR is the person start ruin this department by allowing HORA BATA system. Thereafter Friend of ten present IGP ruin the promotion system. ALL baio with a degree taken in as ASP s more than the carder. Most of these fellows don't know the policing activities. Ruined the CID by appointing backboneless donkeys. What PM can do is to appoint one of the CIVIL servant as IGP immediately to update the department. Allow PC to come up if he is genuine Police officer like UK.

RR will not deviate from his choice

Karalasingam Sivalingam Wednesday, 28 June 2023 11:37 AM

Permit the opposition in parliament to forward a name of the purported appointment for the new IGP..

If there adifficulty, find a interlectual with qualifications from the public service. Not a henchman pls.

Appoint an angel and see Wednesday, 28 June 2023 05:01 PM

Even if you appoint an innocent angel like MR, the 225 strong MPs will influence him in no time. They will make him to dance to their individual tune. If he resists (it is a big IF) his name will be dragged in public. Who can guarantee this will not happen?
