The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP) today claimed that a group of people who claim to be traditional coconut oil producers are paving the way to increase the price of coconut oil in the local market.

NMCRP president Ranjith Withanage said currently a coconut is sold at a high price such as Rs.120 and Rs.130 in the market.

"Due to various reasons, the price of coconut is increasing in the market. Despite the rise in coconut prices, coconut oil is sold at a fair price in the market due to efficiency in the supply," Withanage said.

He said the aim of this group is to increase the price of coconut oil by disrupting the supply to the market and creating an artificial shortage.

"Last year, their aim was to increase the coconut oil price by disrupting the supply in the market and creating an artificial shortage. Last year this group increased the coconut oil price artificially," he said.

"This group produces coconut oil without using proper raw material. They artificially increased the price of coconut oil beyond that of palm oil. They forced consumers to buy the cheaper palm oil, which is harmful to the body and gained high profits," he said.

If their attempt succeeds, the consumer in this country will not only have to buy coconut oil at a high price, but also have to buy coconut oil that has been adulterated with toxic palm oil, Withanage said warned. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

In like manner, please increase FD rates for Senior Citizens ASAP.... we cannot manage to live with the increase in food items and medicines ...

Palm oil is not harmful, and there is vegitable oil too Sunday, 18 June 2023 07:19 PM

This is more fear, uncertainty and doubt being raised by the NMCRP. Coconut oil isn't known to be any healthier than vegetable oil. No credible scientific studies, nor any valid international evidence at all. Indonesia and Malaysians use Palm oil as their main cooking oil as it produced there in abundance. It is cheaper than vegetable oil even there. And there is no evidence of Palm oil being unhealthy. Just more lies by the NMCRP.

Buyers choice in the open market is it not?Food labeled Organic are priced high in the markets of world over ..and we make our choice ..hopefully this 'traditional ' oil is the handmade oil that our Grandmothers valued in comparison with the sekkuwa product .

Let them increase the price, those fools are doing this without the market knowledge. Majority of the consumers are cooking as it is by using spices and water. The end result will be, even after reducing the price the sales will be less, since the consumers will be weaned away from using coconut oil.

We coconut producers in Jaffna only sell coconuts to the whole sale buyers for RS. 58 to 65. Not sure why it has to sell it at RS 120 in Colombo. Why can't the government provide relief to the coconutf farmers and consumers by sending coconuts via rail transportation?

Sorry to say, our government does not believe the potential we have in agriculture sector and unfortunately it's been neglected and not in their menu.
