Asela B Rekawa appointed MEPA Chairman

Attorney-at-Law Asela B. Rekawa has been appointed as the Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) with effect from yesterday (7), by Minister of Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga.

The appointment has been approved by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Hailing from a family of lawyers in Kurunegala, Rekawa, is the son of Ariya B. Rekawa PC and Elsie Rekawa AAL, both prominent and well-respected practitioners in the legal profession counting 50 years of practice.

Educated at St. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia, and graduated from the Sri Lanka Law College in 2000, he is an Alumnus of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and currently reading for his Masters in Criminal Justice Administration at the Open University of Colombo.

He is a Life Member of the Sri Lanka Bar Association and a member of the International Bar Association, serving on its Committees for Pro Bono, Criminal Law and the Asia Pacific Regional Forum.

Mr. Rekawa has served two years (2016-2018) as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket and now serving as a member of its Constitutional Committee, as a Member of the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka's oldest sport & recreation club, the Gymkhana Club, and served most recently as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board – representing Sri Lanka in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Inter-Regional Conference on setting up a Nuclear Position.

    His parents being Lawyers??? Wonder whether his heritage is the most suitable qualification. Is Sri Lanka depleted of qualified personnel in this field.
