Alleged murder of businessman Dinesh Schaffter: Travel ban imposed on Brian Thomas

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court today issued an order preventing former English cricket commentator Brian Thomas from leaving the country in connection with investigations into the murder of Chairman of Janashakti Insurance Company Chairman Dinesh Schaffter.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala imposed travel restrictions in respect of two passports belonging to Brian Thomas pursuant to a request made by Borella Police.

Meanwhile, the Additional Magistrate called for a detailed report pertaining to telephone conversation in respect of deceased's mobile phone number.(Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

When I heard the name Brian Thomas , I thought he was an Englishman, only his photo confirmed he is a Sri Lankan. They surrender their whole identity to white man but they don’t get equality from the whites. That is why most of the Sri Lankan Christians are mentally unstable. If I am leading this murder investigation , I will consider him as a possible suspect unless there are evidence to prove otherwise.

What harm in having an Indian name? Sinhalese had so much of cultural relations with North India since the introduction of Buddhism to this country. I have my 1st name as Ananda, and it is Anand to Indians. Ananda was the 1st disciple of Lord Buddha. Many more Sinhala names are of Indian origin.

It is so irresponsible for the first guy on this forum to say ‘all Christians are unstable’. No point responding to an idiot like that. U cannot generalize a community. I certainly hope the CID will get to the bottom of the matter. Schaffter family has served this country brilliantly in so many way. We are so appreciative. It is so sad that such a lovely family had to face this absolutely heinous crime. But there is a God up there and there will be justice beyond earth. We expect justice while on earth through the authorities.

From the above comments, I can see Sri Lankans don't know much about themselves. Please note that Sri Lanka is a multi ethnic multi religious society. Each community has its origins from a particular part of the world. Sinhalese and Tamils are of Indian origin and so can have Indian names and Burghers have European origin and have European Names. But all are Sri Lankans. Shame on some of the readers who don't even know the diversity of our population.

Surnames like David, Thomas, Hoole, Williams are used by some Tamils in Sri Lanka since the English invaders landed here in 1796. They all are protestant Christians. Portuguese names like Fernando, Perera, Peiris, Silva, Dabare, Salgado, Mendis, Cabraal etc are used by Sinhalese in the coastal regions since the 16th century. Not all are Christians, although some may have been during the Portuguese era 1505 - 1658. It's extremely curious as to why they do not shed their foreign identity even nearly 400 yrs after the last Portuguese left these shores! That way, the Muslims should be saluted for always retaining a Muslim name (identity) no matter where or when.

David as far as I know is a Hebrew name as was the famous King David of Isreal. Thomas is Aramic and Eastern. Christians named children after the followers of Jesus...whats the problem? Did Brian spend it at a casino? Next is he got played out from Brian Thomas. Has he ever or never been played out or being harassed for Kappan before?
