Deputy transport Minister Rohana Dissanayake said yesterday there were moves to employ women drivers and conductors in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses so as to instill some form of discipline on the roads.
He further said such services were being carried out on an experimental basis in Colombo and the suburbs.
Mr. Dissanayake said this proposal was being mooted because women comprised a majority in Sri Lanka and it would also help introduce a disciplined service.
“Women are known to be more patient and kind,” he said and added that it would turn out to be a success because most countries have employed women in this sector.
Mr. Dissanayake said if it worked out successfully then women could be employed in other transport-related sectors as well. (Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa)

Perhaps, one must limit the women drivers and conductors to day time journeys as otherwise, there will be so many drunkards and even local government politicians opting to take the bus in the evenings just to ogle at the women drivers and conductors and one could even hear of cases of rapes on wheels.

In many countries, especially in the West there are no discrimination against women when employing drivers, as it is in Sri Lanka.
