Woman, child strangled; infant suffocated-JMO

The Judicial Medical Officer’s (JMO) report on the charred bodies found at Ratmalana yesterday revealed that the infant had died of suffocation while the mother and the three-year-old child were strangled.

The husband, his mother and the servant woman were arrested.

The mother and the two children had been burnt in their bedroom in a house at the Golumadama Junction, Ratmalana. Dr Dhammika Ariyaratne, JMO of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital had conducted a lengthy post mortem and reported that the woman and one child had been strangled.

Three year old Prashan and 31 year old Sachethana Sandamali had been strangled prior to their being burned; the other child Krishan, who was only one month old, had lain near the body of the mother and died of suffocation due to the smoke.

Police said that when the suspect was interrogated he had confessed and said the murder had been planned and carried out by him. He had said that he had first strangled his wife and her screams had awakened Prashan and he had then strangled him as well.

He had told the police that he had afterwards set fire to the mosquito net with the help of a candle.

The man had said that he had killed his wife as she was involved in an affair with another man. But police said that they were investigating the possibility that the man had had an affair with another woman and killed his wife to be free of her.
