Violation of oath may unseat MPs: UNP

MPs are liable to be unseated from Parliament if they pursued the impeachment motion against Chief Justice (CJ) Shirani Bandaranayake disregarding the Supreme Court ruling, the United National Party (UNP) said yesterday.

The Party’s Vice President MP Lakshman Kiriella told Daily Mirror that MPs took oaths in Parliament to act according to the Constitution and safeguard it.

“The Supreme Court last week gave a ruling that the impeachment process against the CJ was unconstitutional and ultra vires. If the MPs proceed with the impeachment process regardless of the Supreme Court interpretation, they will clearly be violating the oath they have taken to obey and defend the Constitution at all times,” Mr. Kiriella said.

Such an action, he said, would warrant the unseating of MPs from Parliament.

It is the Supreme Court and Supreme Court alone that can interpret the Constitution. Members of Parliament have no right to give their own interpretation,” he said.

The UNP has already announced that it adhered to the court ruling whereas the government members has been critical of it right from the beginning. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have also decided to accept the ruling. (KB)

Yes, if the parliament passes a law that having sex with girls above 15 years is not a crime then judiciary has to obey that. Parliament creates law. Jucidiciary can create law only when the parliament laws are not clear (case presedents)So it is the responsibility of the people who vote to send to parliament who has moral values. People asked for this when they voted them in.

Lakshman Kiriella is wrong....Judiciary cannot exceed parliamentary authority...Judiciary has jurisdiction only to interpret the constitution OR any draft New laws are consistent or not with the provisions of the constitution

MP -must look the judgment and see it was full of error and omission of most important part??????????.if so,supreme court ruling has no meaning and merit at all.in such a event ,the speaker must end this matter and send first lady home and finally all three judiciary members responsible for writing such error judgment also must impeach and send home.how long this dirty drama can keep going?it is people who pay money to donkeys in Parliament and corrupted judders

stupid agrument , thank you for proving that even a donkey can be mp ...eventhough SC have power of interpretation , if it interprets that CJ is new presidnt tommrow do we have to follow that as well?
