The visit of South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was only an official visit and not an ‘interference,’ leader of the National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansa said.
“Visit of Mr. Ramaphosa was not ‘interference by external forces’ and the government had assured me,” he said.
He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had also affirmed that it was only a visit.
He said that therefore he did not believe the visit to be detrimental to the country or in contradiction with his 12 point proposals that the NFF had forwarded to the government.
He said that Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and External Affairs Deputy Minister Neomal Perera had informed the public that the visit would be confined only to discussions and was not an attempt to interfere with the national question of the country.
He said that the 4th demand in the NFF proposal, that no interference of external parties in the national question, would not break up by the visit.
However, he warned that if there were an incident of interference into the affairs of the country, his party would be compelled to review its position in the government.
NFF is a constituent party of the ruling alliance.
“The objective of Mr. Ramphosa’s tour is still unclear. We have nothing against his tour as long as he is not interfering in the internal matters or start appointing probes. We might have to take strong action if he, by any chance, interfered to facilitate talks with political parties, or discussed devolution of power. We will reconsider our stance in the government,” he said. (Yoshitha Perera and Sanath Desmond)
