Video: SL should withdraw from C'wealth: JVP

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said that Sri Lanka should withdraw from the Commonwealth because the objective of the organisation, which had not changed in the course of history, was to maintain their colonial masters’ status.

“It is not appropriate for us to be a member of the Commonwealth anymore. We are a sovereign country. To remain a member of the Commonwealth and giving so much prominence to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and its chairmanship indicates that Sri Lanka continues to remain a colony,” JVP MP Vijitha Herath said.

He said that regardless of who holds the chairmanship at any given moment the Summit the Queen of Britain would always be the Head of that organisation.  “All the power is vested in the Queen as the head of the Commonwealth. The chairmanship is only a position that comes second to the Queen,” he said.

He said that it was ironic to hold the summit in Sri Lanka 195 years after the massacre of our people at Uva Wellassa by the then administration. “Several patriots including Buddhist monks were executed by the British in 1818 while fighting for the freedom of the country,” he said.
