Video: Robbery at Postal Dept. of EAM, suspect arrested

An office assistant attached to the Postal Department of the Ministry of External Affairs had been remanded after he confessed to stealing a parcel belonging to an individual by the name of Arunida P Wimalasiri of Anuradhapura who was been killed in an accident while working in Korea.

The parcel had been stolen after it was sent to the Consul Department of the Ministry of External Affairs by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Korea.

Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told a media briefing that their investigations had revealed that the suspect had sold a gold chain which had been in the parcel to a jewellery store for a sum of Rs 196,000. This amount had been credited to his account. The Colombo Crimes Division, which had been entrusted with carrying out investigations into the theft, had been able to uncover these details from the bank.

The parcel, which was sent to the EA Ministry, had contained a chain, a ring and Korean currency, two ATM cards and a small bag. This was handed over to the ministry on July 9. It had also been found out that the postal department had sent it to the deceased‘s wife and the postal department had obtained documents with the signatures of the officers attached to the dispatch department to prove that the parcel was handed over. However Mr. Rohana said that an investigation carried out by the Examiner for questioned documents determined that the signatures on the documents had been forged.

The Colombo Crimes Division took over the investigation after the Secretary General of the Department of Consuls, Theja Gunatilleke, lodged a complaint with the police about the matter. She had complained after the wife of the diseased, Shanika Sandamali, informed the EAM Consul Department that she had not received the parcel containing her husband’s belongings.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rohana said that thirteen others at the Postal Department of the Ministry had also been sent on compulsory leave. (Sanath Desmond)
