Video: Harsha criticises President’s statement

UNP MP Harsha De Silva today hit out at President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s statement that the opposition wanted an impeachment brought in against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike, stating that government was now trying to blame the opposition for the present crisis with regard to the judiciary.

He was referring to the statement made bythe President that the lobbying made by the opposition against the controversial National Savings Bank (NSB) deal made the government to bring in an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice.

Dr. De Silva told a news conference yesterday that several ministers were also trying to deceive the public by stating that he had requested for an impeachment of Chief Justice over the controversial  NSB deal.

He said he never wanted the Chief Justice impeached but only said she should not be an obstacle to the investigations regardingthe NSB deal. Dr. De Silva said he had to make this statement in Parliament as the then NSB Chairman Pradeep Kariyawasam happened to be her husband. “This is the only statement I made and it is clearly mentioned in the hanzard,” he said.

The UNP MP said the government should take action against 20 others who were allegedly involved in this shady deal if was following the advice of the opposition. “ There are 20 government officials involved in this deal and then why not take action against them if the government if is following the advice of the opposition as mentioned by the President and the Ministers,” he said.
