Upul, Tirantha vie for BASL Presidency

Two nominations for the post of Bar Association of Sri Lanka Bar (BASL) presidency were handed over yesterday. Two senior bar members Upul Jayasuriya and Tirantha Walaliyadda PC handed over their nominations at the BASL head office at Hulftsdorp yesterday morning

Proposed by Romesh de Silva PC, Ikram Mohamed PC and Ananda Wijesekara PC, all former BASL presidents, Mr. Jayasuriya’s name was seconded by former BASL president Upali Gunaratne PC, S. Parathalingam PC and Rohan Sahabandu PC.

The name of Tirantha Walaliyadda PC was proposed by Razik Zarook PC, E. K. I. De Soysa PC and Sunil Shantha Herath. It was seconded by Chandradasa Liyanarachchi, M. P. A. Piyadarshana de Silva and Ms. Inoka Ruwanthi.

At the last election, Mr. Walaliyadda unsuccessfully contested against incumbent President Wijayadasa Rajapakshe PC. At that election held in February 2012, Rajapaksha received 1,297 votes while Walaliyadda received only 676.

Breaking away from the tradition of running two terms consecutively, Mr. Rajapakshe had decided to step down from his post. When contacted Rajapakshe said that he took over the post only for one year and he had informed about his decision even before he was appointed.

Under the leadership of Rajapakshe, who headed the BASL, a policy making body of more than 11,000 lawyers in the country passed several resolutions against the impeachment of the Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. On December 19 a shooting incident was reported outside Rajapkshe’s residence in Nawala.

Another senior attorney Geoff Alagaratnum PC who expressed his willingness to contest for the post had decided to step down making way for Upul Jayasuriya.  (Susitha R. Fernando)
