Upper Kothmale reservoir emptied

The action of the engineers in charge of the Upper Kothmale reservoir in emptying the reservoir as from Wednesday has resulted in a complete shutdown of the hydro electricity supply from this power plant.

At present, 150 megawatts of electricity is added to the national power grid from this plant.

The engineers said this step had been taken to attend to an urgent inspection of the reservoir bund and the reservoir. Filling of this Kothmale reservoir began in April last year, and with the current emptying it has been observed that a large amount of silt deposits lying at the bottom of the reservoir.

The villagers said they were amazed to see this reservoir  had so much silt even before completing one year of its opening, and expressed fears that at this rate,  they foresee a danger  that at  the end of next five years  the reservoir  would  fill up completely with silt.

The villagers also said they suspected the decision to empty the reservoir had been taken due to seepage of water from the bund.

However, the engineers said this action was routine and had been taken to inspect the reservoir and the tunnels as it was one year since water had been filled up in the reservoir. (Gamini Bandara, Illanganthillake, and Ranjith Rajapakse)
