The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Central Committee headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa will meet at Temple Trees tomorrow for a review on Saturday’s elections to the Western and Southern Provincial Councils, SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena said.
He said the Chief Ministers and the candidates to the bonus seats would be decided at this meeting.
The minister told the media that it was extremely unfair to compare Saturday’s results with those of the 2009 results of the elections to the two provinces.
He said the UPFA government was ready to amend its policies, strategy and working programmes if found necessary after reviewing the PC results.
“The opposition is comparing Saturday’s results with those of 2009 because they think we have suffered a setback this time. This is not correct. Do not forget that we have won in 51 out of 57 polling divisions and this is a landslide victory for the Government,” the minister claimed.
He said this victory was achieved during a huge campaign against Sri Lanka by Western powers with the assistance of their local agents and the Tamil Diaspora. The government requested voters to send a strong message to the anti Sri Lanka elements that they fully supported and endorsed the Government’s policies and development programmes and that message is loud and clear.
“The opposition has conveniently forgotten to compare the results of the local government, provincial council and parliamentary and presidential elections since 2009. This is unfair and unrealistic. The government is not ready to accept it as a set-back. But we admit that the JVP and the Democratic Party had recorded some progress,” the minister said.
