UNP to vote against impeachment

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today decided to participate in the two day debate on the impeachment motion and vote against it at the end, informed sources said.

“We decided to participate in the debate and vote against it,” he said.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is yet to decide whether to participate in it or not whereas the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has decided to boycott it.(Kelum Bandara)

UNP is having very peculiar way of handling things. There were two impeachment motions during there regime and they never suggested any laying down of mechanism in the PSC and now trying to uphold SC's decision which is only a proposal to introduce a mechanism in the PSC but not an interpretation of law. UNP is upholding this . It is wrong. and this also a move by them detestably the country with foreign forces.

How can they debate on a document which has been made null and void by the appeal court? If the UNP participate in the debate, that means they accept that the impeachment is legal. Just a thought.

This Court order is not valid because it cannot challenge the constitutional steps taken by the Parliament.
Not relevant to all other actions of the court.

If government says court order is not valid then you have remerge north and east is an court order which is not valid as per parliament TNA should take this up.

This decision to participate in the debate and vote "for" or "against" the resolution, indicates that UNP has done the right thing. It has shown that it is committed to uphold the values, legitamcy and the supremacy of the democratic traditions based on the parliamentary system. A great decision.

I don't think that it will have any sort of Impact on the Government even if the UNP vote against this motion, as there is already a Majority in the Government.
