UNP to question politico’s visit to schools

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) said it would raise questions in Parliament about the incidents which occurred at several Colombo schools last week during a visit by a politician and a singer.

UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told a media briefing that the politician and the singer had violated regulations by visiting the schools without obtaining prior permission from the Ministry of Education.

He said permission had to be obtained from the ministry even to purchase books for school libraries or to screen a film in the school and in such a situation there was no reason for the politician and the singer to enter the school.

Mr. Kariyawasam said the songs which had been sung during the visit were inappropriate in a place such as a school.

“It is not good to corrupt the minds of school children as they are still minors under the age of 18,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
