UNP supports non-military governor for North

The United National Party (UNP) said today it agreed with the suggestion made by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) that a civil governor be appointed to the North Province.

“We too accept that the Governor of the Northern Province should be a civil person and not an ex-military officer,” UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference.

He said the council and the governor should be able to work together amicably to develop the province.

Mr. Attanayake said the request made by the TNA to have more Tamil-speaking police officers in the region was also acceptable.

“As far as I am aware, the NPC is not asking for Tamils to be recruited as police officers but they are only asking for officers who are proficient in Tamil. This is a reasonable request,” he said. (YP & LSP)
