The tense situation that prevailed at the Railway Department’s Head Office in Maradana today compelled the United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians who visited the office on a fact-finding mission to leave through the rear entrance.

Some people who were unhappy with the fact-finding mission had approached the General Manager’s Office as soon as MPs Ajith P Perera, Eran Wickramaratne, Ajith Mannaperuma, R Yogarajan and Harsha De Silva met the Deputy General Manager because the General Manager was not present at the time.

Meanwhile some protestors entered the building and approached the staircase shouting slogans and threatening to chase away the parliamentarians if they did not leave the premises.

Mr. Wickremeratne told Daily Mirror that the authorities took the visitors to the control room through another entrance.

Earlier the MPs took the train from Panadura Railway Station and got off at Bambalapitiya. Eran Wickramaratne, Ajith Perera and Yogarajan managed to get into a carriage amid the large crowds jostling each other but Ajith Mannapperuma and Harsha De Silva could not. They got into the next train. One man was heard asking the MPs to look into problems they faced as train travellers.

“Sir, look at what we are going through. Please do something,” this man pleaded. Some of the commuters who chatted with the MPs said the trains were delayed almost daily.

The MPs said there was insufficient investment for public transport and the services available at the stations were far from satisfactory. (Yohan Perera)
