The main opposition United National Party yesterday adopted a resolution at its Working Committee meeting that the government should appoint three judges from different Commonwealth countries if it opted to refer the findings on impeachment charges against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake to another panel, as announced by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, informed sources said.
The President said on Tuesday that he would refer the report compiled by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) that probed charges against the Chief Justice to another independent panel.
UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe presented a resolution to the party’s Working Committee that a panel of judges from Commonwealth countries should be appointed to probe impeachment charges according to the Harare Declaration to which Sri Lanka is a signatory. He said that the government should stick to this principle in dealing with the issue of the Chief Justice.
The resolution was adopted by the party. Also, he said that the Speaker could take action in appointing such a panel by consulting the Leader of the Opposition and the Prime Minister. (KB)
