Two Turkish men, Ukrainian woman remanded



Two Turkish men and a Ukrainian woman who were produced in a Colombo Court on charges of having carried out an ATM-skimming racket in Colombo were yesterday remanded till July 16.

The CID told Colombo Fort Acting Magistrate that the three suspects -- Zanburkan Hakan and Ahmet Akdemit of Turkey and Maryan Levchnco of Ukraine were arrested on charges of having withdrawn money from ATMs using skimming devices.

The CID said they carried out the arrests when the foreigners were attempting to withdraw money from an ATM located at Colombo 7 and that several local and foreign currency notes, 30 cards with magnetic strips and a data storage device were also seized from their possession.

The CID detectives told Court that they were yet to ascertain the exact amount of money robbed from the machines.

The suspects were charged under Section 3 of the Payment Devices Frauds Act (No. 30 of 2006). (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
