Video: Three arrested over 36-Kilo heroin haul



The Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) yesterday arrested two shipping agents and a wharf manager in connection with the detection of 36 kilos of heroin worth Rs.360 million with a street value of between Rs.6.5 million and Rs.8.5 million.

They are being questioned how the heroin came to be concealed in the 40-foot container carrying hardware items.

The container was checked on Thursday evening by RTF officers after they received a tip off that some 100 kilos of heroin was concealed in the container, which had arrived from Karachi one and a half weeks ago.

On August 31 last year RTF officers led by former Customs Chief Mali Piyasena detected 262 kilos of heroin, which was said to be  last year, the RTF under its former chief, Customs Director Mali Piyasena, detected 262 kilograms with a street value of Rs.2.5 billion. It was said to be the largest-ever heroin detection in South Asia.

The detection was made by a team comprising Deputy Director Siripala Edirimanna, Superintendent Parakrama Basnayake, Wasantha Randeniya, J.A. Jayakody, G. Ganaraj, T. Tickson and Assistant Superintendent Upul Indrajith led by Director General Jagath Wijeweeratne under the directions of RTF Customs Director and RTF Chief K.D Nicholas. (Supun Dias)
