Teacher and brother arrested over theft at Dalada Maligawa



A lady teacher trainee of a government teacher training college and her brother were taken into custody at the Sri Dalada Maligawa today on suspicion over the stealing of cash and valuables of pilgrims and tourists.

Police had deployed an investigation team in civvies at the Dalada Maligawa following complaints from the public to arrest pickpockets and snatch thieves.
Police personnel who noticed the woman concerned meddling with the handbag of a pilgrim had watched her movements. She then signalled to another person to go out and at the entrance both of them were taken in for questioning.

The woman was in possession of the wallet belonging to a Sri Lankan expatriate from UK who was on a visit to the Dalada Maligawa with his infant and the purse of a pilgrim from Hiriwadunna area. Inquiries revealed that the two suspects were the brother and sister. Police said the suspects had been carrying on the racket for a long time.
