Speed guns will be used after sign boards in place-Police

Radar guns to check speeding vehicles will come into operation after the sign boards indicating the speed limits are put up, the Police Headquarters said today.

Clarifying the recent reports on speed limits, Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said the traffic police would not be allowed to prosecute speeding motorists without proper confirmation of a vehicle’s speed.

“According to some media reports police officers will continue to prosecute drivers, who break speed limits without using the speed guns. The report is misleading because motorists can’t be prosecuted without confirming the speed with the use of a speed gun,” SSP Rohana said.

A few days ago the Police announced that speed guns would not be used as evidence to charge reckless driving.

In a 2008 judgement, the Supreme Court directed the law on speeding should only be implemented after sign boards indicating the speed limits are put up in a manner that is visible to road users.

But the Police should reset the Radar Gun after each point out to a car. They do not but show the same reading to each motorist to fine them.
Also the guns must be calibrated regularly to ensure accuracy like under the Weights & Measures ordinance - otherwise knowing how our CTB conductors tampered with the first ticket machines, there will be a lot of wrong doing and the motorists will suffer.

We as motorists know how the Sri Lankan Police can manipulate when they want to charhe someone.
