Special security for Lankan pilgrims

Sri Lankan pilgrims visiting Buddhist shrines in India are being provided special security in the wake of the recent incidents in Chennai where two Buddhist monks were attacked on Sunday and Monday.

Maha Bodhi Centre resident monk the Venerable Kalawane Mahanama Thera said the Tamil Nadu Government had agreed to provide special police squads to accompany Sri Lankan pilgrims visiting Bodhi Gaya and other places of Buddhist worship in Chennai.

The monk thanked the Indian authorities for these security measures and said the Maha Bodhi Centre and the vicinity were safe.

“The areas outside the vicinity of Maha Bodhi Center are unsafe,” he said and added that the monk was attacked yesterday was residing at the Maha Bodhi Center and was safe. He said the attackers had stolen some cash which the monk had with him at the time of the attack.
