Some elements trying to disturb racial, religious harmony: IGP

Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon today warned that some elements appeared to be making a subtle attempt to disturb racial and religious amity and co-existence that prevail in the country.

He said in a statement that the police department was committed to ensure the safety and security of everyone belonging to all races and religions and vowed to treat everyone equally.

The IGP also said Sri Lanka was a multi- racial, multi-religious country and everyone in the country had the right to follow any preferred religion and to free expression, under the Constitution.

He said however, there were attempts by certain elements to portray such free expressions and statements as conflicts between religions.

“Whatever opinions one may have they must be expressed respecting the law of the land, and finding solutions through negotiations among all parties concerned is the procedure followed in a democratic country,” the statement said.

The IGP said it was the duty of the police to ensure the safety and security of each and every person belonging to all races and religions and to implement the law of the country in a manner fair and just by all.
