Smuggling attempt foiled by Customs



Two Chinese and two Sri Lankans were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this afternoon while attempting to smuggle "Walla-Patta" logs and gold slabs worth Rs.28.5 million and Rs.10 million respectively, Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

The Chinese suspects aged 28 and 35-years were arrested with 35 pieces of "Walla-Patta" logs weighing 28 kilogrammes concealed in their hand baggage at the airport customs departure lounge, Mr. Gamini said.

They were attempting to take out these logs to Shanghai, China, he said.

The Sri Lankans aged 26 and 37 were arrested at the arrival lounge with four pieces of gold slabs.

Customs investigations have revealed that the suspects were from Akurana and Kandy. One person had two gold bars weighing one kilogramme each strapped on to his legs using gum tapes while the other person was arrested with two gold bars concealed in his hand luggage. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
