Police arrested six persons in connection with the theft of Rs. 5 million that took place in Matugama, this evening. The suspects included the two alleged armed robbers as well as the three men who transported the cash to a private finance and leasing company.The two men reported to have been wearing full-face helmets were rounded up in Kottawa. Investigations revealed that while making their exit after the alleged robbery, the two suspects had also met with an accident.
As only Rs.1 million in cash was in the suspects’ possession at the time of arrest, the Matugama police further questioned the three men involved in transporting the cash.
They had then confessed that the balance of Rs. 4 million was hidden inside the van which was used for transportation.
Police immediately arrested the driver of the van, the two security guards and the person responsible for transfering the cash.
The two suspects who had arrived on a motorcycle had snatched the briefcase containing the cash at gunpoint, just before it was taken inside the building - even though the individual carrying the cash was accompanied by a security guard. (Supun Dias)
