UNP MP Rosy Senanayake said that sexual abuse against women and children have now reached epidemic proportions
“ child rape, and sexual abuse against females have reached epidemic proportions, a woman, a student and not even a four year old toddler is spared by these creatures who take sexual pleasure in abusing them” she said.
Senanayake speaking at a joint press conference organized by ‘Women for Women’, together with representatives of many other womens rights groups said that the government has to take full responsibility for the current surge in sexual offences.
“Year after year this rate has increased and not decreased, a parent can’t leave for work without the child being abused. What has the government done to prevent this from happening? people only talk about the reported crime rates but what about those unreported due to social pressure?” she asked.
A joint protest is scheduled to be held by all womens rights groups on Friday at 2 PM at the Lipton Circus. Representatives present at the conference urged all members of civil society to participate in the protest.
