Separate court to hear Bhikkhu's cases: DM

9 December 2011 03:15 pm - 21     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

A separate court will be established to hear the legal cases of Bhikkhus very soon, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said in Parliament today. The Prime Minister said that the bill drafted in this regard had been referred to the Cabinet at the moment.

He said that there are numerous court cases involving Buddhist monks, and as a result all these cases should be dispensed with as soon as possible.

Also, he stressed the need to clear the backlog of civil cases. For that, he said that even the government buildings should be concerted to makeshift court complexes if court houses could not be built immediately. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

Then, we also should we have separate invidual courts for priest from other religions as well.. Christian, Muslim, Hindu etc.,... Going back to S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake Era.. where his similar decision was the begginig of total destruction of Sri Lanka that we face today... yet to be recovered. Unfortunately, NO LESSIONS LEARNED.

politicians unable to track priorities of the country .So each person suggest something and even hierarchy doesn't know what to do.When are we going to get set of politicians with clear vision?

    sinhalaya Saturday, 10 December 2011 03:16 AM

It only shows that there are flaws in our justice system and the PM himself has reservations.

Don't you have anything better to do rather than making idiotic comments. The judiciary and the courts are for Sri Lankans. Are Bhikkhus and religious from other denominations criminals or are they alien to have a different court.

Little Sam Saturday, 10 December 2011 02:21 AM

Why not the existing military courts?.

    bigsam Friday, 09 December 2011 03:30 PM

What nonsense is that? What is the case for having separate courts for Bhikkus?

    perera Saturday, 10 December 2011 01:36 AM

what for. if a crime is commited it does not who it is be a mp minister, bikku priest or what ever.
the law should apply to all equally.
this prime mister is out of his depth.
yesterday he wanted to ban wheat flour.
ban importing fruits yes but flour. how stupid is that?

    It's not a shame. It's a priority.

Most friends on this forum seem to be ignorant of the "Sanghadhikarana," or the Monastic Court, which was proposed in 1956. All the past governments in power ignored the proposal. It is commendable to have this court.

Kornelius John Friday, 09 December 2011 11:57 PM

Will the proposed Court have the authority to disrobe bhikkus found guilty?

    MR Friday, 09 December 2011 06:35 PM

    Except me and my friends

    Kanage Friday, 09 December 2011 04:58 PM

What about the christian priests and muslim priests?

They should also have seperate courts!

    Globetrotter Friday, 09 December 2011 04:15 PM

All are equal before the law. There is no need for a separate court for Bikkus. What we need is a more expedient legal system.

    idiot Friday, 09 December 2011 03:52 PM

How about for the priests from the church, hindu temples and mosques?

    Aristotle Friday, 09 December 2011 03:36 PM

    What a shame. God delusion!
