Prisons Spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya said that 557 prisoners had been released island wide today on presidential pardon to mark the 67th Independence Day.

“540 males and 17 females were released from 28 prisons,” he said.

“The inmates do not have to pay fines and seven days have been reduced from their jail term. Those who were released were minor offenders and those above the age of 75,” he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

As a good will gesture, at least part of the Tamil political prisoners, who were in the jail for a long term without any trial could have been released.

During the past none of the Tamil political prisoners included in any of these release or reduction in their term as they were branded into a category called betrayers of the thrown.This time around they could have been included as a start and eventually they all should be brought under an amnesty like done before for JVPers.
