A five-judge Bench of the Supreme Court today rejected the offer of intervention, by the Commonwealth Bar Association and the House Human Rights Committee of the Bar of England and Wales,in matters of law regarding the cases against ousted Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayaka.
The Bench comprising Justice Saleem Marsoof, Chandra Ekanayake, Sathya Hettige , Eva Wanasundera and Rohini Marasinghe rejected the 'amicus curiae' filed by the legal watchdogs.
Attorney General Palitha Fernando appeared for the amicus appellant, while Dr. Sunil Cooray appeared for those seeking intervention.
The intervention was specifically sought to help the court in matters of law with regard to the appeal filed by the Attorney General against the writ issued by the Court of Appeal quashing the decision of the Parliament Select Committee and making it null and void.
M.A. Sumanthiran, J.C.Weliamuna and a host of the other lawyers appeared for the respondents. ( Hafeel Farisz)
