SC directs AG’s representation for impeachment petitions

The Supreme Court directed the Attorney General to appear before the court today in connection with nine petitions filed against the move to impeach Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

The Court made this direction when the petitions which were originally filed in the Court Appeal seeking an order to restrain the impeachment were taken up before the Supreme Court. The Appeal Court had referred the cases to the Supreme Court for an interpretation.

When the cases were taken up today morning, the Supreme Court observed that only the petitioners were present in Court and the views of the Attorney General too needed when the cases are being supported.

The SC directed the AG to appear before court today as determination has to be given immediately. The cases are to be taken up today at 1.30 pm.
