Revellers get nasty shock at Mt. beach

Twenty-one people who were frolicking on the Mount Lavinia beach this evening were hospitalised after coming into contact with a poisonous variety of jelly fish that had been floating in the water.

Sources at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital said those who were admitted had complained of severe itching and had broken out in a rash which was extremely painful and they were undergoing treatment. Their condition however was not said to be life threatening.

This is a variety of jelly fish called blue bottles. Seasonal and come closer to the shore in thousands. Mostly found in Australia.

Possibly that common jellyfish that washes ashore during the monsoon and when trampled causes itching in the foot. As kids in Galle we experienced this seasonal phenomenon and used to love to smash the light blue air bubble just to hear the pop!

This reminds me of an incident of over 60 years backwhen a friend was similarly stricken at the same beach.We had to carry him for medical help. He survivedand is now living in retirement in England after a successful medical career over there.

We need to introduce new policies to stop fish from eating the jellyfish. Any fish caught doing so will be fined a high penalty.
