Colombo District Parliamentarian and member of the UNP’s reformist group Sujeewa Sensinghe said today that the removal of Dayasiri Jayasekara as the Deputy National Organiser of the party was arbitrary and was an act of victimisation.
“I don’t know who has taken this decision but it is clearly an act of victimisation against those who have spoken towards taking the party and the country forward,” he said. The outspoken MP went on to point out that Jayasekara was one of the most talented individuals in the party and what the UNP needs to do is to harness talented individuals to serve the party and the country better.
"This decision is totally arbitrary, what needs to be done is to make sure people like Mr. Jayasekara are given enough space and freedom to do what they have been doing during the past few years, that is serving the people to the best of their abilities, appointments must be made on commitment and talent and nothing else,” he said.
Speaking further Senasinghe pointed out that the enemies of the party are not the ones being meted out punishment by the powers within the party. “The true enemies of the party are the people who voted in Chamal Rajapaksa as the speaker of the Parliament, the ones who held back-door discussions during the 18th Amendment making sure that it was passed with no opposition whatsoever, the real enemies are the people who have given the President and the current regime a free hand in conducting their dictatorial affairs,” he said.
Regarding the attack on Sirikotha, the MP said that he believes those who had caused damage should be dealt with but bystanders and those who simply oppose the status quo should not be victims of this. “The DIG and the SSP both were very clear in stating that the ones who were arrested were not the people who caused damage but those who fought to bring the situation under control, but a few people have given names of those opposing the current leadership and they were taken into custody with no evidence whatsoever,” he said.(Hafeel Farisz)
