It was those interested in destroying the United National Party (UNP), who instigated the clash where several UNPers including a Provincial Council member were injured, UNP National Organiser Daya Gamage told a news conference today.
He said Southern Provincial Council UNP Member Nishantha Pushpakumara was shot by Presidential Advisor Herman Gunaratne, who was also the father of UNP Provincial Council Member Maithree Gunaratne. Herman Gunaratne was among the 22 persons arrested.
Eight people including Mr. Pushpakumara were injured in the clash.
Responding to a question as to whether the Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would resign as mentioned in some media, Mr. Gamage said Mr. Wickremesinghe would resign after ensuring that his successor would be a leader who was able to unite all party members otherwise, there would be divisions in the party.
He further said the reigns of the party should be handed over to an able set of people who could ensure victory at future elections.
Mr. Gamage also said the ‘’leadership council’ proposed by some Buddhist Monks should be welcomed, because all party seniors could work together in such a council. “Anyone in the leadership council who does not work for the betterment of the party would be exposed when such a council exists and therefore it is essential that this proposal be considered,” he added.(Yohan Perera and Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)

Is it because of his incompetence he lost the 2005 Presidential election by 1 lakh of votes after Prabakaran had been bribed to get the northern voters to boycot the elcetions?

invite a person like Sarath Fonseka into the party and allow him to provide a proper leadership to the party and help him to mobilise the people to get the country back on the correct path. This is the need for the hour, and not just to fight each other to come to power to and to repeat what has been happening last three decades.

karu Monday, 07 October 2013 02:13 AM
What the country needs urgently is a charismatic opposition leader to match MR. Ranil has failed miserably among the Sri Lankan people. SP is yet to prove his capability.but worth the chance.

Simple Simon Monday, 07 October 2013 02:14 AM
EXCEPT very correct!!! SP is a SODA PACK who talks big and backtracks at the crucial momoment. He may be a Premadasa but he is not another Ranasinghe Premadasa. His mother instigated the attack at Sirikotha by distributing food parcels and was seen on TV.

To lead the entire UNP to worship Rajapaksas?

Anoma Monday, 07 October 2013 02:43 AM
In terms of strategy, Ranil has won every one of his battles with the Reformists. We have lost count of the number of times Sajith has fallen flat on his face. Karu is a lost case. He couldn't run the Power Ministry properly. Anyway he initiated the crossovers to the Government.and came back with the tail between his legs. Even in the Government, there is nobody who could take the ball and run to take us out of the mess the country has got in. All are crooks bent on building their own castles. There are 10 more Deputy Ministers to be appointed.
Instead of talking about the UNP leadership, it is time that the right thinking people of the country start a debate on how we could extricate ourselves from the mess that we have got in in terms of the economy, law and order, judiciary, foreign relations, moral and ethical values etc. etc.

Sajith is a good long term prospect, today only he can attract the crowd. UNP has to experiment with someone and my bets are on Sajith.

Ranil himself is an incompetent leader so who is going to decide on a suitable successor?

aca Sunday, 06 October 2013 10:22 AM
We have no confidence any more with current UNP hierarchy. It has proven from 1994 beyond any doubt . RW could not even keep the government others like Gamini Atukorala won for him in 2001. How this group identify others capability, again this was proven letting Dayasiri cross over to secure over 300,000 votes. Therefore, without buying time, wasting time and blaming others just resign as a group. New leaders will emerge party will thrive for victory with its own people.

raspi Sunday, 06 October 2013 10:28 AM
I think SP is just a joke. that is why Ranil doesn't resign. you need a good leader
01
Nadi Karunaratne Sunday, 06 October 2013 10:28 AM
Ranil is not the man to judge competency. No decent politicians in Lanka - need a government of technocrats, educated professional who have made a mark in business, education, science, health or other professions - not the uneducated and self-serving demagogues that are bringing ruin and shame to our nation.

‘.. The only leader who fits the bill in the present arid political landscape in my view is Ranil Wickramesinghe…” Golden words of truth unfortunately buried for decades to the detriment of the country and its people. Hope at least now people will realize it.
