UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to intervene immediately and prevent a constitutional crisis.
Making a statement in Parliament, the UNP Leader said at present Sri Lanka was faced with a constitutional crisis.
Raising a question of privilege, Mr. Wickremesinghe said it had come to a virtual constitutional crisis, and the Speaker should take steps to call for a ‘ceasefire’ without any further delay.
He asked the Speaker to dedicate the next two days to initiate a dialogue with the relevant parties to the problem, including the lawyers concerned.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said it should be ensured that no more court orders were issued against Parliament. Referring to media reports that the UNP had boycotted court proceedings with regard to the impeachment motion, he said the MPs were not obliged to go before court according to the Speaker’s ruling.
“How can we boycott court proceedings when there is no obligation to appear before it? Some MPs appeared before court voluntarily. Otherwise, there is no such obligation. We asked our two MPs of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) not to do so in keeping with the Speaker’s ruling,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.
